Like A Forest Fire

My most recent paintings are views of the fringes of suburbia, places that feel as though they are familiar, but then escape our conditioned response. I aim to place the viewer as still points of a turning world – alone, for a while, then, after this brief period of reconnaissance, watched as they look on. The one-time observer becomes the observed. The scene switches between mundane and hinting menace. There is a sense of something latent, the path leads into a darker unknown from which something may emerge or into which something has disappeared.
The ‘For Sale’ sign is a recurring motif in recent work, possibly implying minor disruption or greater upheaval. It certainly implies change and its attendant disturbance of routine. It is my attempt at a visual puncture (something you do not notice until it is almost too late), or interruption in an otherwise ordinary scene.
Another aim is to describe a certain mood with the tools of painting. The marks are tightly controlled, bordering on obsessive. Part of me would like them to be more lyrical and flowing, but I also realise that the painstaking approach assists the meaning. If the artist is prepared to dedicate so much time, the motif may be more important than we first imagined. I strive to create a vaguely unsettling atmosphere by using a slightly higher colour key, without being gaudy or Fauv.
